"Torajahuis, model van hout gemaakt. In goede staat.
Among the Sa´dan Toraja, the traditional adat house (tongkonan) is an important symbol of identity and status. A house is associated with the person who commissioned its construction. The houses are named, and descendants of the apical ancestor who built it refer to themselves in relation to that house. The age of the house is measured in the number of generations of descendants from the original owner. There has been an historic progression in the architecture: the form of the house has become increasingly tall, the house posts longer, and the roofs more arched, and extended. Inhabitants have taken to living in more comfortable constructions beside them; the importance of the house is becoming increasingly symbolic. House models such as these are symptomatic of that symbolic importance. Made for tourists, there could hardly be an object more typical of the Sa´dan people. These houses number among the most spectacular indigenous buildings in the Indonesian archipelago.
An important aspect of the adat house is the carved and painted wood decorations especially in the front of the house. The decorations indicate high status. In the past, houses belonging to slaves were undecorated. Several of the patterns are associated with high status families. The overhang of the roof to the front and the back protects the elaborate carved wood decorations. In this model, the decorations are finely executed, but not entirely to scale. In the real house, these decorations are more numerous and more elaborate.
The mythical bird (katik) at the front of the house is a traditional decoration.
